"Where the rooster pecks at the stars"

Up there, people say that the rooster pecks at the stars… Funny story! This is the highest village in Europe, perched at an altitude of 2042 metres! And it’s true that the sky above Saint-Véran will make your head spin.

Why stay in Saint-Véran?

Saint-Véran is like a vast opened book to the sun at an elevation of 2042 meters. Volume I: a profusion of efforts and pleasures! Snow takes up so much space in the alpine domain linked to Molines that you’ll think you’ll be able to ski all your life! The cross-country ski trails and snowshoe tracks are like a carpet. For the rest of the year, walk to the lakes, peaks and passes of the legendary GR58. Careful Volume II: abundance! The pure air of Europe’s highest county (2040m) invites you to slow down. Alone or with family, Saint Véran is designed for strollers. Its pedestrian streets are lined with fountains and crosses. The terraces with breathtaking views will relax you even more, and in the evening it’s time to dive into the stars from the village or the observatory!

Village presentation

Fill up on vitamin D!

The trouble is, you never want to go to bed because you’re enjoying the show. So we found a trick. Every time you go hiking, take a little nap in the sun. Don’t you look good? You made your own suncreen there, at the “Maison du Soleil”. Their recipe is great, and you’ll never get a sunburn. This climate is incredible ! They say there’s an average of 300 days of sunshine a year. In fact, there are sundials on every street corner. We might as well tell you that we put our watch away and never took it out again during the vacations. And that feels really good!

The downhill ski area

The Saint-Véran alpine ski area is linked to Molines-en-Queyras’. It culminates at 2,830 meters and offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks from the “Crête de Curlet” to the “Tête de Longet” and the emblematic Mount-Viso! Molines – Saint-Véran is a high-altitude ski area with untouched slopes, but also with skiing in the larch forest! It offers all level pistes , from suitable descents for beginners to those approved for competition. There’s something for everyone!

Astronomy

Under a lucky star

Here, “rolling your eyes at the sky” is a good omen. From the very first night, it becomes your ritual. Each night, the stars come out and start dancing. You tip-toe, arms outstretched towards the Milky Way, you feel the stars so close to you. A villager even told you about an observatory on a peak 3000m above sea level. It’s like a stepping stone to the celestial vault. They say you can sleep there, under one of the purest skies in the world. I think you’ll have to go back there if you didn’t try it out!

Taking root

I quickly lost track of time. You know, at this altitude, you learn to live with nature and the locals. They deserve a lot of credit for settling in these high valleys. Classified as one of France’s most beautiful villages today, life here wasn’t always so gentle. At the Soum museum, I met Jeanine, a local girl. She knows her stuff. She told me about the traditions. About log houses, woodworking and farming. Then with the arrival of skiing, the resort and Nordic activities. An encounter that makes you want to linger and read between the lines.
