What treasures did this strange cupboard with 8 locks hide, so that it needed 7 representatives of the Queyras communes and the Grand Consul to open it simultaneously to unlock it?
-
Symbol of the Republic of Escartons, it was made in 1773 by Joseph Sibille, cabinetmaker in St-Véran and contained the "archives of the Queiras valley", containing all the decisions taken by the elected officials of Escartons. It is made of cembro pine and decorated with relief sculptures of Italian influence.
The mechanism was created in such a way that this cupboard could only be opened if all 8 key holders were present and opened the lock at the same time... a taste already pronounced...Symbol of the Republic of Escartons, it was made in 1773 by Joseph Sibille, cabinetmaker in St-Véran and contained the "archives of the Queiras valley", containing all the decisions taken by the elected officials of Escartons. To try to solve the enigma, you will be able to see it in Ville-Vieille, hidden in the Maison communale on the 1st floor.
