Immeuble du Barry, Patrimoine du XXème siècle

Historic site and monument, Historic patrimony, House, Outstanding contemporary architecture in Saint-Crépin
  • In 1972, the implementation of a bypass allowed the village of Saint-Crépin to come back to life, which resulted in many works and the realization of an extension of the village and its houses.

The municipal will not to build a "bar" in the village led initially to imagine a housing estate composed of small independent houses. However, this proposal was quickly replaced by a new project, the result of the collaboration of the architect of the buildings of France, the services of the departmental direction of the equipment (DDE), the promoter and an architect from Gapençais.

The project is organized as a transplant operation, adopting the solution of terraced houses that extend the village. The houses have one floor and attic space under steeply pitched larch shingle roofs, most of which are rendered and sometimes decorated with stone facing. Wooden shutters and dormers, as well as exposed beams and railings, add a warm, traditional touch.
The group of houses adopts a curved form, parallel to the contour lines. The houses are aligned on the village side, but are animated on the valley side by the play of heights and setbacks.

A first set of buildings has been completed. Within the framework of a second phase, another set is envisaged in the lower part. Without pretension, the operation is characteristic of the urbanistic and architectural research of the 70s and 80s to improve the quality of village extensions. Placed in a monumental perspective at the foot of the church of Saint-Crépin (classified as a historical monument), very much in view on the edge of the national road when one goes up the valley of the Durance, it is presented as a natural extension of the village.

The label "Patrimoine du XXème siècle" (20th century heritage) was launched by the Ministry of Culture and Communication in 1999; its purpose is to identify and bring to the attention of the public the buildings and urban ensembles, whether or not they are protected as Historic Monuments or protected areas, whose architectural and urban interest justifies passing them on to future generations as fully-fledged elements of 20th century heritage: it is about constructions and major urban complexes of the XXth century built between 1900 and 1975 without distinction of program (works of art, housing, public buildings, factories, tourist equipment...). This heritage is indeed very exposed. The Ministry of Culture and Communication has created this label to highlight and safeguard the buildings and urban complexes that, among the achievements of this century, are material witnesses to the architectural, technical, economic, social, political and cultural evolution of our society.
