Although some people mention the existence of processions to the church in the hamlet of Sagnes, the site has in fact always been occupied. As early as the 7th century, a church was built there on an ancient passageway; nearby, taking advantage of this strategic point, a castle was built in 1100. On the vertical rocky bar (the Crepon), today covered with wood, was the ancient castle of Réotier. It marked the power of the Dauphin, because Réotier was the only village in the territory not under the influence of the archbishop of Embrun. Despite the growing power of the Dauphin in the region, the Guillestrois was the property of the archbishop of Embrun until the French Revolution. Only Réotier resisted the hold of the archbishop of Embrun until the end.
