Eglise Notre-Dame

Historic site and monument, Religious heritage, Church, Religious site, listed, Roman, 15th C, 16th C, 20th C in Saint-Crépin
  • The Notre-Dame church is one of our local pride. You can see its spire in the distance from the road or in the mountains. The village of Saint-Crépin is built "in a snail" around the church which gives a unique character to the village.

  • This Lombard style church has the famous pyramidions that characterize many churches in the north of the department. Built on the former church of Notre-Dame, it is the result of the church reconstruction program, wanted by the archbishop of Embrun in the 15th century. This Lombard style church has the famous pyramidions that characterize many churches in the north of the department. Built on the former church of Notre-Dame, it is the result of the church reconstruction program, wanted by the archbishop of Embrun in the 15th century. The church of Notre-Dame was consecrated in 1452 by the archbishop of Embrun. It was therefore the first of the program. In this way, he wished to restore the splendor of the places of worship and to affirm the Catholic power in the face of the many Protestants and Waldensians in the region. It will serve as a model for many other churches in the area: a Lombard bell tower topped by an octagonal spire, a building made up of a single nave without a lower side or transept. Observe: the 4 protruding stones above the porch: they supported a wooden canopy on two columns. They were supported by two lions like in the church of Guillestre and Saint-Marcellin in Vars. The church of Notre-Dame is in the late Romanesque style and is classified as a historical monument. Note its pink marble facade, its semi-circular arch, its bell towers with arches and its sumptuous marble tabernacle.
