Saint-Clément-sur-Durance, un village fortifié

The 'Trou des chiens' (dog hole) is a vestige of the rampart; waste water used to flow through this hole. The gateway at the corner of rue des tilleuls and rue Bacchus (look! wine again) marks the boundary of the old village. The village used to be located a little further south. It stood between the tower and the road below. Saint-Clément-sur-Durance is strategically located at the bottom of the valley. In 1692, the Duke of Savoy defeated a regiment made up of royal and Irish troops and ended up destroying the point and setting fire to the village.
