It's moving to follow the journey of Cino, the film's hero, across the Alps.
In a small village in Italy's Piedmont region, nine-year-old Cino and his siblings live in extreme poverty. His parents have no choice but to entrust him to a French cart driver, who will take him to his homeland. There, he will be hired out to work in the mountain pastures of the Mercantour. During his journey, Cino befriends Catlin, a little girl his own age. They soon become separated when Catlin falls ill. On his arrival in France, Cino is hired by a shepherd. Ill-treated by his master, he manages to escape and is reunited with Catlin. The two children set off on a wild journey across the Alps to find their way home. The road to Italy is fraught with surprises and dangers. The mountains, inhabited by mysterious forces, seem to have a magical influence on Catlin...
