But what is a naïs? What crops were they used for in Eygliers?
What was the purpose and origin of the "naïs" next to the fountain?
In mythology, Naïs or Naïade was the nymph of rivers, fountains and springs... What a beautiful story!
Here, the naïs is a water tank, lined with clay to make it watertight. It is built near a stream that is diverted. Water is stored here for gardens, crops and, above all, for rolling hemp - another local raw material which, once transformed into filament and then woven, was used to make cloth.
