As far back as the 7th century, a church was built on the site of an ancient route, and a castle was built nearby in 1100, taking advantage of this strategic location. The ancient château of Réotier stood on a vertical rocky outcrop (the Crepon), now covered in woodland. Despite the growing power of the Dauphin in the region, the Guillestrois remained the property of the Archbishop of Embrun until the French Revolution. Réotier was the only town to resist the Archbishop of Embrun to the bitter end.
