Although some people talk of processions to the church in the hamlet of Les Sagnes, the site has in fact always been occupied. Note the parish church standing alone on a rocky outcrop...
As far back as the 7th century, a church was built on the site of an ancient route, and a castle was built nearby in 1100, taking advantage of this strategic location. The ancient château of Réotier stood on a vertical rocky outcrop (the Crepon), now covered in woodland. It marked the power of the Dauphin, as Réotier was the only village in the area not under the influence of the Archbishop of Embrun. Despite the growing power of the Dauphin in the region, the Guillestrois remained the property of the Archbishop of Embrun until the French Revolution. Réotier was the only town to resist the Archbishop of Embrun to the bitter end.
