High-altitude lakes in a glacier valley!
A high-altitude hike on the Italian border in a protected area is a unique experience! From the parking lot above the Agnel refuge, the ascent to the Col Vieux zigzags between alpine pastures, protected flora zones and cheerful marmots, making for a fun climb! A high-altitude hike on the Italian border in a protected area is a unique experience! From the parking lot above the Agnel refuge, the ascent to the Col Vieux zigzags between alpine pastures, protected flora zones and cheerful marmots, making for a fun climb! Arrival at the Col Vieux means the switch to the Bouchouse valley, with Lake Foréant already below us. Along the way, you can meet the marauders from the Parc Naturel Régional du Queyras, sentinels of the right attitudes to adopt so that tourism has as little impact as possible on these protected natural areas (lagoquiet). They are there to share their knowledge of the richness and fragility of the site. After the Col Vieux, the trail descends to the peaceful lake, which you can walk around or choose to continue your adventure to its neighbor, Egorgéou, 40 minutes further on. The return journey takes the same route.

In spring and autumn, conditions are changeable, and even without snow the trail can be icy. So the reflex in the mountains is to "go out well equipped". In my bag, I slip or hang crampons and poles.

In winter, the right reflexes are: snowshoes, poles, gloves, hat, sun cream and... a survival blanket! Experience is essential, and knowing when to give up is sometimes preferable to taking risks. And if you're new to the mountains, don't hesitate to call in a professional! Before going out, I check the Météo France Montagnes and BERA bulletins (risks and avalanches).

In summer, the marauders of the PNR du Queyras welcome you to their chalet on the parking lot.
