Follow the red-and-white GR 58 up the Aigue Blanche, through the larches, to the Clausis chapel. The terrain softens, and the Lac de la Blanche and its bucolic refuge come into view. Before you, the most emblematic three-thousanders: Pointe des Sagnes Longues, Pic de Caramantran, Rocca Bianca, Tête des Toillies... (watch out for a stiff neck!). The refuge de la Blanche is a starting point for a tour of the tête des Toillies, and an opportunity to visit our Italian neighbors in the Valle Varaita. For the return journey, follow the same itinerary or choose the PR trail behind the refuge, which leads back under the Chapelle de Clausis. There are two options for the return journey: take the shuttle bus, which charges a fee in July/August, on the track after the mines, or walk back the way you came.

In spring and autumn, conditions are changeable, and even without snow, the trail can be icy. So, in the mountains, the reflex to adopt is "go out well equipped". In my bag, I slip or hang crampons and poles.

In winter, the right reflexes are: snowshoes, poles, gloves, hat, sun cream and... a survival blanket! Experience is essential, and knowing when to give up is sometimes preferable to taking risks. And if you're new to the mountains, don't hesitate to call in a professional! Before going out, I check the Météo France Montagnes and BERA bulletins (risks and avalanches).
