  • From Château-Queyras and its formidable fortress, I'll make my way through the forest to Montbardon, a village perched high above the Guil gorges.

  • At Eygliers-gare, you'll find a southern fragrance that's unique in the Hautes-Alpes. Overlooking us, the fortress of Mont-Dauphin and its light-colored facades respond to the blue hues of the Durance River.

    1 - Eygliers Station
Departure from Eygliers station, on the banks of the Durance and at the foot of the fortified town of Mont-Dauphin. The route leaves the gentle valley floor to enter a different, more austere world, one that appeals to cyclists who love this land of character.

    2 - Réotier petrifying fountain
Just off the bridge, nature is already winking at me with the "Fontaine Petrifiante de Réotier (880 m)" a few dozen metres from the road. The calcite deposit freezes the rock, creating an astonishing stone sculpture.

    3 - Les Guieux
At the end of the bend, the road climbs a little. At the top of the small hill, I turn left onto a stony forest track that takes off towards Les Guieux. The ascent is gradual and takes place under a canopy of pine trees: I won't suffer too much from the heat of this June day.

    4 - Plateau des Lajards
After a series of switchbacks, I emerge on the "Plateau des Lajards (1,409m)". The landscape opens out towards the Durance valley to the south and the Queyras combe to the east. I continue on the road opposite, which begins to descend.

5 - On the balcony of the Durance
In this last section, a few seemingly livable houses cling to the slope. This idyllic image of a holiday resort can't compare with that of a not-so-distant past in a hard-working region... The landscape opens up, offering beautiful views over the Durance valley. In the commune of Saint-Clément-sur-Durance, the road winds between stone houses that blend into the scenery.

    6 - Réotier
A short detour to the left takes me to "Réotier (1,164 m)" via a beautiful little road. From the hamlet, I rejoin the route, which continues downhill. After 7 bends, the D38 takes me back to the beautiful Durance. At the bridge, I feel as if I've returned from another world. With its contrasts of color and atmosphere, the Guillestrois region is a landmark for hikers and mountain bikers, who want nothing more than to return again and again to these landscapes of light.

Make the short round trip to visit the Réotier church, where astonishing tombstones are set into the wall.
Avoid hot weather to complete this hike. No water in the forest.
