"Really? There's violin in Africa?"
Concerto pour Sokou, the new creation by violinist Clément Janinet, aims to challenge this age-old question and highlight the Sokou, the traditional West African violin, often misunderstood, threatened with extinction and yet thousands of years old...
The project began when Clément Janinet travelled to Bamako in 2020 to meet Adama Sidibe, a young Sokou player and the last professional Sokou player in Mali. Their meeting gave rise to a repertoire, Concerto pour Sokou, written by Clément Janinet and premiered in 2020 as part of the Africolor Festival.
With the album Sokou! released in 2023 on the Helico Music label, Clément Janinet and Adama Sidibe intertwine the sound of their violin, at the crossroads of West African Peul music and Western repetitive music. Mandingo influences are also added, with the presence of singer Mah Damba, heir to the griotic culture, and djely ngoni player Badjé Tounkara, a long-time companion of Ballaké Sissoko.
