Exploration Tour of the Assan Integral Biological Reserve - ONF

The Assan Integral Biological Reserve is a wilderness area where nature is allowed to evolve freely without human intervention. Its 1,032 hectares are home to a wide variety of forest habitats, including old-growth Scots pine forests with century-old trees, numerous remarkable species such as the Isabelle butterfly and the Eurasian pygmy owl, and more than 330 plant species (including 7 protected species such as the Alpine columbine). Its rugged terrain, ranging in elevation from 1,050 to 2,609 meters, has prevented the construction of roads and trails and greatly limited human traffic and activities. Located within the Queyras Regional Nature Park, between Guil and Cristillan, in the communal forests of Ceillac and Guillestre and the state-owned forest of Montdauphin, this reserve—created in 2014 at the initiative of the municipalities of Guillestre and Ceillac—is a small, unspoiled gem preserved and managed by the National Forest Service. A unique opportunity to discover the history of this forest heritage, the remarkable species and trees found there, and the naturalist studies being conducted on-site. This hike takes place off-trail, as there are no marked trails in the reserve. The route is steep and involves a 300-meter elevation gain. Hiking gear is recommended for this off-trail hike (hiking boots, hiking poles, plenty of water, and, depending on the season, protection from the sun or rain) We’ll eat together—everyone should bring their own picnic lunch!
