The stages of the Tour du Queyras

Departures from all villages are possible

You know that the Tour du Queyras is an incredible loop trek, but you don’t know where to start? Here you’ll find all the different stages to prepare your itinerary, you can do it any way you like and begin at your favorite starting point.

The original Tour du Queyras

In 10 stages

The great thing about the GR 58 is that it is a loop that goes through all the villages of the Queyras. Thanks to the villages’ hospitality, you can breathe, stock up on supplies or treat yourself to a good meal. There’s always a way in (and out) this joyful Hautes-Alpes farandole just around the corner.

All practical information

  • Starting from the opposite direction to the classic tour described in the FFRP topo guide allows you to find the less busy lodges and refuges.
  • A direct departure from the Mont-Dauphin Guillestre train station is possible, with a first stop in Mont-Dauphin OR Guillestre.
  • The red and white GR markings are well maintained. There are no particular difficulties in finding your way around, but don’t forget: in the mountains, you always set off with a map or a topo guide.
  • Most of the itinerary is accessible from mid-June to September .
  • Some high-altitude passes may still be snow-covered until early July. You’ll need to be equipped with ice axes and crampons to negotiate these “névés” (parts of snow).
  • The Tour du Queyras can also be done in winter with snowshoes, ski touring or Nordic ski touring.

If you want to combine lightness and comfort (two antagonistic concepts in touring), then Hallelujah the “Sherpa Queyras” service is here! Your luggage will be transported from one accommodation to another, saving your back the effort. If, like the “Gîtes et Refuges du Queyras association”, you want to commit to a “0 waste” objective, leave with your tupperware or buy a reusable box from gîtes or refuges of the first stage, for the price of 3€. Cloth napkins and your picnic bags will limit the use of disposables in favor of reusables!

Variations of the GR58

Over the years, the original Tour du Queyras has been enriched by numerous versions, each worth several visits. We named them A,B,C and… D. Easy, but not very sexy. Since then, they have been grouped into three “GR”s (Great Walks): Tour du Pain de Sucre, Tour de la Font-Sancte and Tour de la Dent du Ratier. If you’re clever, you can also add your own variations. From south to north, we suggest the Tour de la Tête des Toillies, the Tour du Pelvas, the Tour du Bric Bouchet and the Tour du Rochebrune.
