Description

In the footsteps of miners.
Copper, the first metal used by humans, was used to make jewelry and tools during the Copper Age. Mining continued over the centuries until the advent of electricity, which marked a boom in the 20th century. It shaped the landscape until the early 1960s. To learn more, visit the exhibition at the Forannes bread oven in the village and read the informational signs on-site. The hike begins at the parking lot and heads toward the Sainte-Marie-Madeleine Chapel to join the ridgeline trail known as “Le Grand Canal.” Follow the trail through the mountain pasture, passing the Beauregard hut and then the Labounnais hut. Go straight at the intersection with the trail leading to the observatory, and finally enter the world of the mines. For the return trip, take the GR58, which winds through the woods along the Aigue Blanche. In spring and fall, conditions are unpredictable; even without snow, the trail can be icy. Therefore, when in the mountains, the rule of thumb is to “go out well-equipped.” In my backpack, I pack or clip on: crampons and trekking poles. In winter, the essentials are: snowshoes, poles, gloves, a hat, sunscreen, and… a survival blanket! Experience is key, and knowing when to turn back is sometimes better than taking risks. And for newcomers to the mountains, don’t hesitate to call on a professional! Before heading out, I check the Météo France Montagnes reports and the BERA (avalanche and risk alerts). Starting October 1 for a period of 3 weeks, we recommend taking the left bank of the Aigue Blanche for the return trip (logging operations in the Bois du Suffie).
