Why stay in Aiguilles?

If the Queyras were a village, Aiguilles would be the place where shops offer what stoppers-by or residents need. You’ll stroll through a lively village where people say hello to you even if they don’t know you. You’ll find services such as a grocery store, bakery and tobaco-press shop, as well as a number of cosy B&Bs and hotels, and a few fine restaurants. But it’s also the place to come for medical care. With its hospital, nursing home and pharmacy, Aiguilles is where you’ll want to be if you get hurt, if you want to ski or play in the Guil… “Ad Guillum”, according to some, is the other origin of the village’s name!

With its 400 year-round inhabitants and beautiful bourgeois houses dating from the first half of the 20th century, Aiguilles is a little more of a “pretty little town” than a “high-perched village”. These famous homes, known here as “American bellas”, were built by the Aiguillons who had returned from the Americas. And don’t miss the astonishing Eiffel House on the banks of the Lombard torrent. Like the larch forests its name evokes – Marassan, Chanteloube or Bois Foran – the surroundings are magnificent and wild. A famous resort since the “Belle Epoque”, you’ll appreciate its central location, confident in its charms, without ostentation. Whether you’re walking, biking, snowshoeing or skiing, you’ll feel like you’re admiring a past that’s still very much alive. You’ll experience that strange, gentle sensation of floating between yesterday and tomorrow.
