Mine de Cuivre

Historic site and monument, Industrial site, Mine in Saint-Véran
  • A few kilometers from Saint-Véran, by going down into the valley on the road to Clausis, you will be able to see the remains of the copper ore exploitation: the 45% rich bornite.

  • This contemporary exploitation started at the beginning of the 20th century with more or less success.
It will not recover from the big floods of 1957 and will end in 1960, the network of galleries is important, but unfortunately more accessible today.
This place was also exploited 4000 years ago. It was the Chalcolithic age with the extraction of native copper and metallurgy with processes that have left traces (grills, reduction of ore) on this major archaeological site.

You can be inspired by the magic of this industrial heritage by taking the long circuit "in the footsteps of the miners" from the village, or a shorter circuit from the marble quarry.

A small exhibition on the mine is installed in a former common oven of the village, in the Forannes district.
